Dark Side Song Fiction By Isabella Clark

Minarets student Isabella Clark submitted the following work under the category Song Fiction, with the Kelly Clarkson release, Dark Side. Written by Busbee and Alexander Geringas and produced by Greg Kurstin, Dark Side was released by RCA Records.

“Song Fiction is basically when you take the song of your choice, and write a story that goes along with the song,” Isabella explains. “You just write a little dialogue or something short in between each verse and that’s pretty much it.”

Dark Side lyrics are shown in italics.

Dark Side (2012) lyrics with new song fiction by Isabella Clark

There’s a place that I know, it’s not pretty there but few have ever gone. If I show it to you now, will it make you run away? Or will you stay? Even if it hurts. Even if I try to push you out, will you return? And remind me who I really am… please remind me who I really am.

“Get off me!” The young girl shouted, pushing him away, “I hate you!” she yelled, slamming the door in his face.

The girl’s father started to cry and put his hand on her door, “Please… Sheyanne…”

“No! You’re a monster! How could you do this to me again?” She stood on the other side of the door with tears streaming down her bright red cheeks.

“I didn’t mean to, Sheyanne, please believe me!” Her father tried defending himself, but was obviously losing.

Everybody’s got a dark side. Do you love me? Can you love mine? Nobody’s picture perfect, but we’re worth it, you know that we’re worth it. Will you love me? Even with my dark side?

Her father finally gave up, he walked over to his desk and started to write a note.

‘Dear Sheyanne,

It has occurred to me that no matter what I do anymore-‘

He stopped, staring at the note, “Not good enough.” He said to himself. He crumpled the peice of paper up and tossed it to the trash can. He started a new note.

‘Dear Sheyanne,

We live in two different worlds, apparently I am no longer welcome in yours-‘

He stopped again and crumpled it up then tossed it to the trash can, then started a new note.

Like a diamond from black dust. It’s hard to know what can become if you give up. So don’t give up on me, please remind me who I really am.

Sheyanne’s father came to an abrupt stop. He forced a hand up to his heart and groaned. He called for his angered daughter, who never came. He stood weakly and stumbled into her room, he opened her door. Her curtains flowed in the wind from the opened window. His eye’s once again filled with tears as his chest filled with nothing but pain. He couldn’t get another word out before he fell to the floor.

Everybody’s got a dark side. Do you love me? Can you love mine? Nobody’s picture perfect, but we’re worth it, you know that we’re worth it. Will you love me? Even with my dark side?

He looked over to the window and breathed deeply. He tried reaching the phone his daughter had left sitting on the night stand, but he couldn’t reach it.

“Sheyanne!” He started to call for her again, “Sheyanne, Please, I need you! Come back!”

Don’t run away, don’t run away! Just tell me that you will stay, promise me you will stay… Don’t run away, don’t run away! Just promise me you will stay! Promise me you will stay… Will you love me?

Hours later, Sheyanne crawled back through the window and silently shut it. She turned and saw that the door was wide open, then she looked down only to see her father on the floor.

“Sheyanne…” his voice barely a whisper.

Sheyanne didn’t know what to do. She didn’t know what to say, all she did was slowly lay next to him.

“Don’t leave me here…” he gasped for a breath.

Everybody’s got a dark side. Do you love me? Can you love mine? Nobody’s picture perfect, but we’re worth it, you know that we’re worth it. Will you love me? Even with my dark side?

“Daddy.” Sheyanna slowly sat up, she then started to cry as she watched her father take his last breath.
