Mariposa Sheriff’s Release Body Cam Footage

MARIPOSA COUNTYThe Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) has released body cam footage and additional information related to the Deputy involved shooting that took place last week on Wednesday, November 30th, 2022.

We had reported here that Mariposa County sheriff deputies were on the scene of a deputy-involved shooting. The incident took place on Frank Wilson Rd near the First Baptist Church and School. A male subject was declared deceased at the scene. At the time, very little information was being released and following the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures, all deputies involved in the shooting were immediately placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

The following day, Thursday, December 1st, 2022, MCSO reported that the officer-involved shooting subject had been identified as Joshua Antelope, age 24, a transient of Mariposa County. They also stated that a full critical incident video including body-worn camera footage would be released as soon as all information was compiled.

On December 6th, 2022, MCSO released a Critical Incident Video containing footage from a Deputy Involved Shooting that occurred on 11/30/2022. They also advised viewer discretion due to the content of the video.

The video begins with the incident details stating that at approximately 9:30 am that morning, Joshua Antelope was seen by the school staff outside, carrying a knife. He had broken a window where the staff was present. The principal then attempted to contact Mr. Antelope who chased the principal. The principal returned to the building and contacted 911.

The video includes the call the principal made to 911 at 9:15 am in which he stated that there was a man with a knife on the school campus and the dispatcher replied they would send the sheriffs.

Following are the actual body cam videos of Deputies Maya and Anderson, who were dispatched to the school and arrived on the scene at 9:18:09. Upon arrival the deputies see the suspect and get out of their vehicle. In both body cam videos, you can clearly hear both officers repeatedly yelling at the suspect to drop the knife. The suspect continues to advance towards Deputy Maya and that’s when you see the deputy discharge his weapon and Mr. Antelope collapse to the ground.

The video is not easy to watch and one can only imagine what the deputies went through that day and will have to live with the rest of their lives. Sierra News Online would like to extend our best wishes to the officers involved, the family of the shooting subject, and the community of Mariposa.
