AHWAHNEE — Wasuma Elementary School’s PTA held its first Color Run to raise money for the activities it provides for students throughout the year.
This includes assemblies, field trips, music instruction, family movie nights, academic pentathlon, spelling bee, and book fair — to name a few.
Students collected pledges per lap, or flat donations, from family and friends, hoping to win a class party for raising the most pledges, on average, per student in the school.
The day began bright and early with students gathering on the field in their new Color Run t-shirts ready to get painted.
The Gold level sponsors covered the cost for every Wasuma student to receive a special event t-shirt, which can be worn on school spirit days and other campus events throughout the year.
Kids had 30 minutes to run around the course as many times as they could, while stopping at various color stations to be sprayed with non-toxic paint by parent volunteers. With over 95 percent of the school participating in the race, the energy was palpable.
After completing their run, laps were counted and each child received a popsicle before going back to class. Fun was had by all.
One highlight of the day was the antics of junior high students who were given extra motivation by their teacher, Mrs. Bond. She told them if they raised $40 in pledges they would be allowed to throw water balloons at her!
The day was a great success, thanks to the wonderful parent volunteers and teachers who went above and beyond the call of duty. And special thanks to the community sponsors who supported our event.
