Over the past several weeks, Virtual Yosemite has been able to significantly expand their coverage of eastern Sierra gateway locations to Yosemite, during spectacular fall color displays.
These locations include Lundy Canyon, Lee Vining Canyon, the June Lake Loop, and other parts of the Mono Basin and Inyo National Forest. Efforts to photograph these locations were done in short breaks in the weather, and most particularly, shifting blankets of smoke and unhealthy air quality from the huge Creek Fire about 30 miles to the south.
The Creek Fire is currently the largest wildfire in California’s history. It is expected to continue burning until winter rains and snows arrive. Most of Yosemite and its surroundings on both sides of the Sierra have been covered in thick smoke since August. Numerous other fires in California (including four in Yosemite) have also contributed to the state’s continuing air quality problems this season.
Yet, in spite of these challenges, beauty can still be found in these often stunning locations.
