Update On The Wheeler Fire Near Coulterville

COULTERVILLE – Firefighters have made excellent progress on the Wheeler Fire, burning in northern Mariposa County near the community of Coulterville.

The fire is holding at 115 acres and is now 95 percent contained.

There are currently 19 engines, 15 crews, 3 water tenders and 2 dozer assigned to the incident. Firefighters continue to do mop-up, reinforce firelines, and patrol the perimeter.

The Wheeler Fire was reported at about 12:30 p.m. on Monday, June 18, south of Highway 132 near Lake McClure. The rapid growth and dangerous terrain prompted evacuations and road closures, however intense suppression efforts by firefighters allowed for residents to be able to return home by 6 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
