Sheriff Warns Of Counterfeit Twenty Dollar Bills

MARIPOSA COUNTY – Mariposa County Sheriff Doug Binnewies is warning residents of counterfeit twenty dollar bills surfacing at businesses in the Sonora area.

The Sonora Police Department has announced that unknown persons are passing counterfeit twenties, and Sheriff Binnewies is warning local merchants to be on the lookout.

Reportedly all the bills look and feel authentic, but upon closer inspection, they are found to be missing water marks and the embedded security strip found on real money.

It was also said that most of the bills had the same serial number and had uneven borders.

“I wanted to bring this to the attention of our Mariposa County residents and business owners/managers, especially those that are working the registers,” says Sheriff Binnewies. “If you believe you are in possession of a counterfeit bill or someone is attempting to pass you a suspected counterfeit, please call the Sheriff’s Office at 209-966-3615 so a deputy can respond and investigate.”
