Road 222 Crash Results In Major Injuries

OAKHURST – A two vehicle accident just east of the Mountain House blocked traffic for over an hour this morning, and resulted in major injuries to one driver.

Just after 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Mar. 24, Steven Avellana, 41, of Oakhurst was eastbound on Road 222 at approximately 45 mph, approaching the intersection with Road 220, according to CHP.

Benjamin Leslie Peugh, 59, also of Oakhurst, was stopped at the stop sign of Road 220, and reportedly pulled out directly into the path of Avellana, who locked up his brakes and swerved to the left but was unable to avoid colliding with the Chevy S-10 Blazer driven by Peugh.

The vehicles collided and spun out into the westbound lanes of Road 222, with the Blazer overturning onto its passenger side. The 1999 Dodge pickup driven by Avellana landed on its wheels.

Avellana suffered minor injuries in the crash, and an 18-year-old passenger was uninjured.

Peugh sustained major injuries and was air lifted to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

Traffic was delayed in the area for about an hour. Everyone was wearing a seatbelt, according to CHP. The accident is under investigation.
