MADERA COUNTY — A local hero was recognized by the Madera County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) as George Stillman retired from Madera County Search and Rescue last week after 18 years of volunteer service.

“Affectionately known as ‘SAR George’ by other team members, he has served in a variety of capacities throughout the years,” said MCSO in a public statement. “He spent much of his time in Operations as part of the Off-Highway Vehicle team and also provided Logistical support on the Communications team.”

SAR George is most proud of his time working on the Sheriff’s Office Operation Lost and Found (OLF) Program, MCSO posted.

The OLF Program provides a tracking bracelet for those with medical conditions that may cause them to wander away from their homes. SAR George would meet with OLF clients each month to change batteries in the bracelets and visit with them and their families.

“We can’t thank SAR George [enough] for all of the time he has selflessly dedicated to the Sheriff’s Office and the citizens of Madera County,” MCSO stated. “We wish him well on his next adventure!”
