Mariposa Master Gardeners Plant Sale

MARIPOSA — Good news for green thumbs. Mariposa Master Gardeners have been propagating since last fall and seed-germinating since February in preparation for their annual spring plant sale and now the time has come. Stop by on Saturday, Apr. 28, starting at 8 a.m. in the Amigo Picnic Area at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds, located at 5007 Fairgrounds Road. The event lasts until 1 p.m. or until sold out.

Hundreds of tomatoes including hybrids, heirloom, cherries, romas, purple, yellow and striped are growing in their red cups and are now ready for transplanting into your garden. Some intriguing names: Smarty Grape, Aunt Ruby’s German Green, Chef’s Choice Green VFT, and Vernissage Yellow.

In response from requests at last year’s sale, there will be more flowers and annuals this year.

Drought tolerant plants are always a good idea, including Salvias, echinacea, butterfly bush, rudbeckia, and bee balm. The Master Gardener’s California native list includes California fuchsia, white yarrow, and Clevlandii sage.

Among the vegetables likely to be available are globe and Asian eggplant, sweet and Thai basil, parsley, sweet and Asian peppers, and tomatillos.

Master Gardeners are  planning for mosquito fish, free mulch, informational booths, clever garden art, possibly Ponderosa Pines, and a booth for your questions.
