Man Arrested After Brandishing A Gun

MARIPOSA – On Saturday, Sept. 28, just after midnight, a verbal fight broke out on 5th Street near Highway 140 in the town of Mariposa, leading to the arrest of one of those involved.

The altercation was between two small groups of people. One group of Mariposa County residents were conversing outside of the Pizza Factory and the second group, reportedly mostly from Washington State, had exited the Gold Coin Bar and Grill when the altercation began.

Reportedly the whole thing started after a verbal exchange between the two groups regarding the Seattle Seahawks NFL Football Team.

The parties separated but shortly thereafter, the out-of-town group came back in their vehicle, described as a red Ford Mustang.

One male adult, Kazz Mathews, 19, from Washington, exited the vehicle pointing a pistol at the individuals with whom he had been arguing, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He was quickly tackled by witnesses and had his pistol wrestled away. Mathews and his group then left the scene in the Mustang.

Mariposa County Sheriff’s deputies responded and contacted people in area who may have witnessed the altercation. They also located the red Ford Mustang, initiating a traffic stop to continue their investigation.

After collecting statements and reviewing security video, deputies arrested Mathews for felony assault with a firearm. Mathews was processed into the Mariposa County Adult Detention Facility where his bail was set at $50,000.

The pistol, a semi-automatic .380 caliber, appeared to have been loaded at the time of the assault and was collected by deputies.
