Madera County On Why They’re Raising The Fees On Trash

MADERA COUNTY – With the Oct. 1 date approaching for the increase in trash collection and disposal fees in Madera County, Public Works Director Ahmad Alkhayyat issued this public notice on Sept. 18, explaining the rate hike.

Dear Madera County Residents:

This notice is to advise you of an adjustment to the solid waste disposal fees in Madera County. On August 21, 2018, the Board of Supervisors approved an increase to the tipping fees at the Fairmead Landfill and North Fork Transfer Station. Part of these increases changed the disposal rate for both franchise haulers (Redrock Environmental Group and Emadco Disposal Services) from $40.00 per ton to $55.00 per ton effective October 1, 2018.

This disposal fee increase is extremely necessary for the County to maintain and fund capital projects at the Fairmead landfill such as gas system upgrades, new baseliner construction, and enhanced environmental monitoring to remain in compliance with applicable regulations. In order for Madera County to continue providing you with relatively low cost and high level of trash collection services, we must absorb the cost of these projects and operating costs.

Due to this disposal fee adjustment, the franchise haulers will consequently adjust their service rates beginning October 1, 2018. The increase will be approximately 6% and your franchise hauler will have updated rates tables included with your October invoices.

We understand the impact this has on our citizens and we truly apologize for the inconvenience of these changes.

Lastly, I would like to add that the franchise haulers do not control these disposal fees, nor financially benefit from them in any way.

Should you have any questions regarding the rate adjustments, current landfill projects, or any other related topic, please feel free to contact the Public Works Department at the number listed below.

Best Regards,
Ahmad M. Alkhayyat, PE, MBA Public Works Director
