MARIPOSA – A head-on collision on Highway 140 just north of Mariposa has resulted in the death of a Mariposa man.
At 3:44 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, Stephen Ward Wells, Jr., 78, from Mariposa, was westbound on Highway 140 in a 2000 Ford Explorer just west of Grosjean Road when, for unknown reasons, he allowed his vehicle drift into the oncoming lane.
Beverly Slaght, 82, also of Mariposa, was eastbound in a 1991 Ford Explorer, and was struck head-on by the oncoming SUV.
As a result of the crash, Wells suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Mrs. Slaght sustained major injuries and was transported by air ambulance to Doctors Hospital in Modesto.
The collision remains under investigation.
