Fatal Accident On Highway 49 In Oakhurst

OAKHURST — An Ahwahnee woman was killed this morning on Highway 49 after her truck apparently slipped on a patch of black ice.

Just after 9:30 a.m., the woman was southbound in a Chevy Silverado on Highway 49 rounding a corner near Vista Del Rio Drive, when she apparently hit an icy spot in the road, causing her truck to slide sideways and travel into the northbound lane.

A mother and son on vacation from Lemoore in a Dodge Ram pickup towing an empty flatbed trailer, were northbound at the same location at a stated speed of 50 to 55 miles per hour.

The Chevy Silverado crossed into the northbound lane and the driver of the Dodge was unable to avoid the collision. The Dodge struck the Chevy on the passenger side, pushing it onto the east shoulder of the road. The force of the collision caused the Dodge truck to overturn, partially blocking the northbound lane.

Cal Fire, Madera County Fire, Madera County Sheriff, CHP, Sierra Ambulance and Caltrans responded to the scene. Caltrans put one lane traffic control in place as the accident was investigated.

The driver of the Chevy sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased. The occupants of the Dodge were evaluated by EMS at scene and apparently suffered no injuries.

The identity of the victim is not being released pending notification of next of kin.
