Caltrans Reopens State Route 140 in Mariposa County

MARIPOSA COUNTYThe California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) reopened both directions of State Route 140 in Mariposa County on Friday, March 31, 2023. Route 140 was closed approximately 15 miles east of Briceburg due to a rockslide caused by winter storms in mid-March. Motorists traveled around the slide area via a detour on Route 140 at Foresta and El Portal roads.

Caltrans would like to thank all local partners, including CHP, Mariposa County, and Yosemite National Park, for their coordination and cooperation, as well as motorists for their patience and for being mindful of the safety of all highway workers.

Road closures due to snow, flooding, and rockslides in some areas are still possible. If you must travel, be prepared for winter driving conditions. In the mountains, always have chains, winterize your vehicle, and pack an emergency kit. Stay back and give snowplows and first responders room to work safely.

In wet weather, reduce speed and follow at a safe distance, inspect wipers, and replace if needed. Don’t use cruise control, check headlights, inflate tires to the correct pressure, check the tread, and heed flood warnings and road closures.
