Mariposa County Presentation and Judging Day

On Saturday, Feb. 23, Mariposa County 4-H held Presentation and Judging Day at New Life Church in Bootjack. Six members gave presentations before Judges Codie Hart, Ginnie Day and Kathie Hollan.

Bridget Sharrar, the only primary member to present, gave a demonstration about silkie chickens. Lilly Goodman demonstrated how to to thread a sewing machine, and Robyn Sharrar demonstrated how to extract DNA from peas.

Emma Nielsen presented an educational display on shotgun safety, and Nina Sharrar presented an educational display on choosing a rabbit breed. Gloria Sharrar presented an interpretive reading on the picture book Roxaboxen.

Lilly Goodman, Nina Sharrar and Robyn Sharrar presented by reading the 4-H Creed. After each presentation, members were asked questions by the judges. Members were judged on their presentations, and awarded pins for gold, silver and bronze. Gold medalists can go on to present at Regional Presentation Day. Nina Sharrar won a gold for her rabbit presentation.

Afterwards, members participated in Judging Day in the gym. There were tables set up in the gym with four items each and members judged which were best or most suitable from 1 to 4.

Some of the different things to be judged included which clothes would be most suitable to wear for State Leadership day in summer, which pig in a photo would be best for market, which photograph of a flower was best, which cookies were best, and which tool would be best for cleaning horse hooves. Intermediate and Senior members gave reasons for their judging in front of an adult volunteer.

Also, there were contests for decorated aprons, sewn aprons, and recycled aprons and a table setting contest. Members’ scores were tallied and medals were given according to their scores.

Savannah Brown, Catheys Valley 4-H Club won best decorated apron for intermediate, Lilly Goodman won best sewn apron and Emma Nielsen won best table-setting. Reagan Broomfield, Emma Nielsen, and Lilly Goodman were high point for the judging contest and many members earned pins for their hats.

Thank you to the Broomfield family for helping with the snack bar, to the tally crew and judges, and for the committee who helped put the event together.

Coming up is Regional Presentation Day for gold medalists from Madera, Merced, Mariposa, Stanislaus, San Joaquin and other counties. It will be held at Mariposa High School on Saturday, Apr. 13.
