OAKHURST — “Maybe it’ll stop you trying to be so desperate about making more money than you can ever use? You can’t take it with you, Mr. Kirby. So what good is it? As near as I can see, the only thing you can take with you is the love of your friends.”

The Minarets High School Drama Program this year is proud to announce their fall show, You Can’t Take it With You. Written by George Kaufman and Moss Hart in 1936, the play takes place in 1938 New York in the home of the very unusual Vanderhof-Sycamore-Carmichael family.

Minarets’ Kayla West is the teacher of both the beginning and advanced drama classes, and is directing.

“There are so many plays about dysfunctional families out there,” says West. “The play You Can’t Take it With You is one of the few plays that is actually about a functional family. This family is quirky, bizarre, unique, and ultimately hilarious. However, they all love and support one another in their hopes and dreams. This is a wonderful feel-good play that will leave the audience with stitches in their sides from laughing so hard, as well as the wonderful reminder of living life to its fullest.”

West also directed the school’s production of Rodger and Hammerstein’s Cinderella last year, as well as Arsenic and Old Lace the year before that. Minarets drama program alumni Jessie Parr is back to help direct. The show is being put on by a cast of twenty, from both the beginning and advanced classes, seven of whom are seniors. Students also manage sound and light during the shows.

Check out the performance on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. at Sierra Pines Church in Oakhurst. Tickets are $10 at the door, and all benefits come back to the drama program and future productions. The cast and crew are very excited to put on this show and even more excited for you to come see it. So we invite you to come enjoy the show, and laugh along with us!
