Working Together For Change: Be The Power Of One

MOUNTAIN AREA — The season of giving continues and so far, we’ve profiled a public radio station, an educational foundation, a theater company, an artists’ coalition, and more, as we invite readers to join in celebrating twelve local community organizations and nonprofits, and the people behind them who are making a difference.

For our ninth spotlight, we focus on Be The Power Of One, a local organization formed in the aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010.

Day #9 Be The Power Of One

  • What is it? The purpose of Be the Power of One is to raise funds to promote education in developing communities, including Haiti and Mexico, leading to more sustainable communities. Funds raised are used to purchase critically needed supplies and services including school supplies, books, desks, food, and infrastructure such as water wells and school buildings.
  • Who’s behind it? Susan Madden is the Executive Director, with Frances Feeney as Board President, and Susan’s husband Tim Madden as Vice-President. For a complete list of the Board, visit the website.
  • Why we love it. The focus of fundraising is on encouraging individuals, businesses and groups to give what they are able to give, no matter how small, and to promote the belief that many people working together can affect significant, positive change in the world. Special attention is given to involving primary and secondary schools in the United States in fundraising efforts, incorporating their efforts in lesson plans and creating a better understanding of different cultures.
