Mariposa Man Dies After Crashing Into Merced River

MARIPOSA — A single-vehicle accident on Highway 140 between Yosemite and Mariposa has claimed the life of the driver.

At about 7:45 a.m. this morning, a 72-year-old Mariposa man was eastbound on Highway 140 about 2-1/2 miles east of Briceburg Road when he lost traction on the icy road, according to CHP.

He then lost control of the Ford F250, which rolled over and plunged down the rocky embankment and into the Merced River. The vehicle came to rest on its roof, nearly completely submerged in the icy water.

The driver was extricated from the truck and transported to John C. Fremont Hospital in Mariposa where he was pronounced deceased.

There were no passengers in the vehicle, and the accident is under investigation.

The identity of the victim is not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin.
