Zombie Walk Benefits EMC SPCA

zombi open clip artOAKHURST – Be on the lookout for the undead soon as local thrift shop A Cause For Paws has set the date for their 6th annual Zombie Walk: Saturday, October 17 starting at 5:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event benefit the Eastern Madera County SPCA (EMC SPCA).

Organizers say about 100 members of the community, including kids and adults, will join together and dress up as “The Walking Dead,” slowly leaving the thrift shop at 5:30 p.m.

The group will be walking, or shuffling, uptown to Vons Shopping Center, the amble across to Raley’s Shopping Center and then back to A Cause For Paws. They plan to chant, moan and generally scare passersby and shoppers they encounter on the yearly migration.

On return to the thrift shop, all of the walkers are treated to the Undead After Party, with entertainment including a DJ, plus food and drinks. Kids may enjoy a scary Haunted Walk which includes zombie clowns and pirates. Organizers offer a cash prize for the best zombie costume and multiple raffles.

The requested donation is $5 for every participant and chaperone for the walk and entrance to the party. As they move through town, zombies plan to collect donations for the EMC SPCA from people on the street, businesses and motorists. Over the years zombies have collected a total $5,000 for this worthwhile non-profit organization.

The thrift shop is locally known as a cat rescue and they have found homes for more than 500 abandoned cats and kittens. They also donate a $500 scholarship each year called the “Future Veterinarian Award”.

This year, several sponsoring businesses have pledged a percentage of their sales on special “Zombie” days to this effort. Sponsors will have coupons and special promotional items for the Zombies to enjoy. These and other sponsors will be recognized throughout the party, including Burger King, Carl’s Jr., Jack-in-the-Box, DiCicco’s Italian Restaurant, Raley’s Supermarket, EMADCO, All Automotive, and Vic and Ruth Bladel.
