Fresno Man Dies in Weekend Drowning Accident at Angel Falls

BASS LAKE — A Fresno man died Sunday afternoon (May 17) while trying to cross Willow Creek near Angel Falls.

The Madera County Sheriff’s Office confirmed late Sunday afternoon that Marcos Moreno, 30, of Fresno, drowned in what was initially reported to be a “medical” rescue off Road 274 at Willow Creek.

The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. above Bass Lake.

Law enforcement officers — and a medevac air ambulance — were dispatched to the scene after authorities received reports of an individual submerged under the water.

A spokesperson for MCSO confirmed the victim was hoisted out of the water by helicopter about 1:30 p.m. Attempts to revive him using CPR were unsuccessful.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Moreno was attempting to cross the creek and became “overwhelmed” and was then pulled beneath the rushing, frigid water.

Just last week (May 9), an off-duty Fresno CHP officer rescued a man trapped in a whirlpool at Angel Falls.
