Search Continues For Two Firefighters Missing In Yosemite

YOSEMITE — The search continues for two firefighters who are missing in Yosemite National Park after failing to return from a six-day hike.

ABC30 reports that Javier Avelar and Dave Brown planned a six-day backpacking trip near Hetch Hetchy and did not show up for work this week. The search began yesterday.

Park officials say the two Fullerton firefighters, who are experienced backpackers, planned to hike the Smith Meadow Trail and were supposed to finish through White Wolf on Sunday. However, they did not return.

ABC30 reports that their car has been located, and that Fullerton Fire Chief Wolfgang Knabe has put together a team of about 20 searchers, working with the Park Service.

Officials are asking anyone who has been in the area of the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, White Wolf or Smith Meadow between Sept. 6-12, or have any information regarding these individuals, please contact Yosemite National Park Dispatch at 209-379-1992.
