Marine Corps’ Toys For Tots Roundup This Saturday

OAKHURST — Thanks to everyone who attended the Toys For Tots “Double Your Donation KickOff” at the Oakhurst True Value on Nov. 23. Donations included over 400 toys and almost $600 that will go to support toys for needy children in the Eastern Madera County area.

But the 2019 campaign is not over yet!

Past campaigns have benefited over 1,100 children per year and incurred over $50,000 in toys. Especially lacking are toys for boys and girls age ten and older. Marines and volunteers heard many stories during the day from folks who were helped in their youth by Toys For Tots and who continue to support this unique program.

The program was initially started by a Marine from southern California over 70 years ago. The Marine Corps League – Detachment #1121 of Oakhurst has sponsored the Toys For Tots program in our area for over sixteen years. The community businesses, volunteers, and individual sponsors are the greatest factor in making this annual program the success that it is.

Donation boxes are present in 100 locations, from Raymond to North Fork. They cannot accomplish the goal without community involvement.

This Saturday, Dec. 7, rain or shine, tents will be set up and volunteers will be present to accept your toys and donations in two locations: Old Mill Shopping Center in Oakhurst and the Coarsegold Historic Village on Highway 41 in Coarsegold.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Oakhurst and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Coarsegold.

Law enforcement, fire trucks, ambulances, and possible other vehicles may attend, depending on weather, but rain or shine, Marine Corps volunteers will be there to accept your new and unwrapped toys, which will go to needy children who may not receive a Christmas toy without your help.

For questions about these events, or any matter regarding Toys For Tots, please contact Dennis Osantowski, Toys For Tots Coordinator, Eastern Madera County, at 970-209-2099.
