Library Workshop: Origami Christmas Cards

OAKHURST — If you missed the opportunity to make beautiful origami Christmas cards in a past Oakhurst Library workshop, instructor Carla Hyatt is back again this year with new designs for handmade holiday greeting cards. The workshop is scheduled from 10:30 to noon on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2016 at the Oakhurst Branch Library.

Hyatt, who lives in Bakersfield, is the sister of Oakhurst Library Branch Manager Dale Rushing. She has presented themed origami workshops in past years at the library – most recently in April of this year – and they have always “been a hit” with local participants, says Rushing.

This year, participants will learn to make an origami Christmas tree, a Santa Claus and a poinsettia to decorate cards.

A retired junior high school math teacher, Hyatt says she used origami in her classes to teach important math concepts like fractions and geometry.

“Origami was a fun way to teach students to pay attention and follow directions while experiencing the hands-on process of doing something themselves. You will have something to be proud of when it is finished,” she continues.

Hyatt says the workshop is best for children who are at least 10 and older as well as adults of all ages. All supplies for the workshop will be provided. A five dollar donation is appreciated, but not required.

The free event is sponsored by the Friends of the Oakhurst Branch Library. The workshop will be held in the Oakhurst Library’s Community Room, 49044 Civic Circle Dr. For more information, call the library at (559) 683-4838 or visit www.oakhurstfobl.com.

Hyatt will present the origami workshop later in the day at the North Fork Library from 2 to 3:30 p.m. The library address is 32908 Road 222 and the phone number is (559) 877-2387.
