Highway 41 Delays Over Deadwood Today

MOUNTAIN AREA — Commuters are reporting extreme delays over Deadwood today between Oakhurst and Coarsegold, particularly in the northbound lanes, where one driver said traffic inched along on Highway 41 just north of the old Broken Bit Restaurant for about 50 minutes before it cleared.

Caltrans PIO Cory Burkarth explains that contractors are doing emergency maintenance work today, repairing a mudslide near Victoria Lane in Oakhurst, north of the current tree removal area. That’s why the one-way traffic control is in place by Caltrans, according to Burkarth. The emergency maintenance work is expected to be complete this afternoon, while traffic may take time to clear.

Tree removal only holds traffic for under ten minutes at a time, he says, which could mean delays as long as 15 minutes for cars at the back of the line. Starting Monday, be prepared for those delays to return as the tree removal process continues. Cautious drivers may want to add an extra thirty minutes to their travel time in order to stay on schedule.
