Girl Scout Leader Recruits New Troops In Coarsegold & Raymond

COARSEGOLD —  An energetic Girl Scout of more than 55 years has trained many leaders in the Girl Scouts of Central California South Council. Fortunately for the kindergarten through third grade youth of Raymond and Coarsegold Elementary Schools, this year she’s volunteering to lead a new troop.

On Thursday, Sept. 8, parents and youth are invited to the recruitment and Sheila Otteson’s first meeting at 5:30 p.m. in the Coarsegold Elementary School Multi-Purpose Room.

“I want to share scouting with my granddaughter,” said Otteson, “by beginning a Daisies troop at Raymond school.”

Girl Scouting succeeds by volunteer leaders and parents who are willing to participate in regular activities. Those who attend the Sept. 8 meeting should expect a request for parent volunteers and a quick start for the new troops. The new troop leaders plan to meet several afternoons per month throughout the school year.

A new Volunteer Leader for a Brownies Troop at Coarsegold School, Shelly W. Gutierrez, will help at the recruitment.

“With parent generosity, I plan to provide a school year of positive opportunities for our youth,” says Gutierrez. “Our Brownies Troop would enjoy scouting by leading the way on fun journeys of their choosing.”

Superintendent/Principal Michelle Townsend at Raymond School and Principal Jared Pierce at Coarsegold Elementary School have approved Girl Scout meetings on campus, say organizers, allowing the new troops to meet on campus after school.

About Girl Scouts of Central California South
Every year, Girl Scouts of Central California South gives more than 10,000 girls in Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, and Tulare counties, programs that help them grow, learn and have fun. That allows 5,000 of these girls who would not otherwise be able to participate due to various life situations, to be served through its Girl Scouts Connect Program at no cost to their families. About 3,000 adult volunteers provide vital Girl Scout troop leadership.
