Free Smart Phone Workshop At Oakhurst Branch Library

OAKHURST — Because the cellular industry is “extremely complicated” and “requires constant learning,” Kevin Baker and Brandon Cummins of the Sierra Tel Business Center in Oakhurst know from experience that people are always going to have lots of questions about their smartphones.

So, they’re planning a special “Smartphone 101 Question and Answer” workshop at the Oakhurst Branch Library Community Room from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 12. The library’s Community Room is located at 49044 Civic Circle Drive in Oakhurst.

Baker, manager of Sierra Tel’s local business center, says he and Cummins will answer questions people have about both Android and iPhone operating systems. According to Baker, some common questions people usually ask is how to send a text message, how to compose emails or how to set up an email account.

“And, then there are the really technical questions such as ‘why am I experiencing dropped calls?’” he adds. At the workshop, Baker said they can also help get people set up with Sierra Tel’s server.

Baker, who lives in Oakhurst, has worked as a cellular sales representative for Sierra Tel for 13 years. Cummins, a recent Fresno State College graduate who also graduated from Yosemite High School in 2011, is new to the a cellular sales workforce at Sierra Tel.

Although neither Baker nor Cummins planned on a career in the cellular business — Baker studied graphic arts and Cummins recently graduated with a degree in history — they are both grateful for the opportunity to work in the Oakhurst mountain community and help others with their technical needs.

“Both of us wanted to work in a wonderful community and for a wonderful company,” says Baker. “Working for Sierra Tel has enabled us to do both!

The free workshop is sponsored by the Friends of the Oakhurst Branch Library. For more information, call (559) 683-4838 or visit www.oakhurstfobl.com.
