John C. Fremont Healthcare District and Mariposa County Community Services Hosts the Advanced Care Planning Workshop

On Tuesday, November 6th, 2018 an advanced medical directives and physician’s order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) workshop, will be held at the Mariposa Senior Center at 5622 Spriggs Drive, From 11:30am-1:00pm.
A living will (advanced directive for healthcare) is a document that expresses wishes concerning desired medical treatments should a person become unable to make medical decisions. The first part of advance health care directives power designates an agent to make decisions for the person. The second part directs the agent to follow certain instructions.
The California Hospital Association notes that part 2 of the form “lets you give specific instructions about any aspect of your health care, whether or not you appoint an agent. Choices are provided for you to express your wishes regarding the provision, withholding, or withdrawal of treatment to keep you alive, as well as the provision of pain relief…”
Advance care planning is not just about old age. According to the American Journal of Preventative Medicine a 2014 study showed that 26.3%) respondents reported they had an advance directive whereas 74.7% did not have one.
The top two reasons respondents gave for not having an advance directive were “I don’t know what advance directives are” (24%) and “my family knows my wishes” (16.4%). Although respondents less than 54 years of age were most likely to report not having advance directives (68.3%), 31.7% of respondents 55 years of age or older also reported not having one.
John C. Fremont’s Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Timothy Schendel, will lead the workshop and participants will have the opportunity to complete a valid advanced directive. While most participants will be able to witness each other’s documents, Kym Brownell will be at the workshop to notarize documents at no cost.

*RSVP to the Senior Center at (209) 966-5315 or in person.
