Update: Authorities ID Two Killed Early Sunday in Crash on Hwy 41

COARSEGOLD — A single-vehicle traffic accident on Highway 41 claimed two lives early Sunday morning.

The driver of a 2001 Honda Civic, Layna Ronette Marquez, 48, of Coarsegold, died in the incident, which reportedly happened after Marquez over-corrected on a turn and hit a tree.

A passenger in the vehicle, Chana-ne Botchon Reid, 25, from Coarsegold, was also killed in the crash.

Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP responded to the accident scene on Highway 41 just south of Morava Road around 2 a.m. (Feb. 9).

After hitting the tree, the Honda reportedly landed on its side and started smoking. “After the collision, a passerby stopped at the collision scene and called 911,” said a CHP report.

Authorities have not said if drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.
