Marine Corps. Holds Memorial Day Ceremonies

Oakhurst- The Marine Corps League (#1121) in Oakhurst, together with the Veterans of Foreign Wars (#8743), hosts the annual Avenue of the Flags for Memorial Day (May 30th) at Oakhill Cemetery.Placing flag in cemetery on Memorial Day

“We are seeking veterans and their families to help put up the flags at 07:30 a.m. and take them down at 3:30,” said Maryann Enciso, the VFW Commander.

The event also will include Memorial Day Ceremonies conducted by retired Chief Master Sergeant Maryann Enciso and retired Corporal, Joe Wilson the Commandant of the Marine Corps League. These ceremonies are to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our Country.  The ceremony consists of a prayer by our Chaplin, a reading, and the placement of a flag on a veteran’s grave, followed by three rifle volleys and the playing of Taps. The public is invited to attend at any of the following locations.

Times and Locations

0900   The Indian Cemetery at the Wassama Round House in Ahwahnee.

1000   The Oakhill Cemetery in Oakhurst.

1100   The Picayune Cemetery above the Casino.

1300   The North Fork Cemetery.

“Our time-honored tradition is to put up the flags every Memorial Day to honor our fallen heroes, Enciso said. “we would like to continue this tradition for our community.”

Judi Hussain

Judi Hussain escaped from the big city to the wilds of eastern Madera County over thirty years ago. During her time here she’s worked at selling doors and windows, coordinated Road Scholar adventures at a local conference center and served as visitor center coordinator for Visit Yosemite Madera County. After the COVID shutdown upended her world, she "enjoyed" her first retirement months ever and couldn't wait to get back to work. When offered a position in January 2021 as the chamber administrator for Oakhurst Area Chamber of Commerce, she grabbed it and held on tight. Her diverse passions include hiking, beading, dog mushing (observer, not participant), travel, writing and languages. The shutdown offered an opportunity to expand on her journeys to Israel in 2016 and 2018, and she’s now studying Hebrew in preparation for a return to the land she uexpectedly grew to love. She’s investigating other travel prospects, as well, targeted toward the end of 2022.
