Coarsegold Fire Now Estimated At 100 Acres

COARSEGOLD — The “Broken Fire,” so-named for its proximity to the long-closed Broken Bit Restaurant on Highway 41 north of Coarsegold, is now 80 percent contained at 103 acres as of 7 a.m. Tuesday.

The fire broke out just before noon today on the Veater Ranch, threatening one home before the forward progress was stopped at about 3:20 p.m. Pre-evacuation notices for residents in the area were lifted at 3:40 p.m.

Crews will stay throughout the night for mop-up and patrol, strengthening lines and ensuring the fire doesn’t flare up.

Some 150 firefighters battled the blaze that was burning in grass and oak woodlands on a steep south-facing slope.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
