MOUNTAIN COMMUNITIES—University of California, Cooperative Extension’s Livestock & Natural Resources Advisor for Mariposa and Merced Counties, Fadzayi Mashiri, is hosting a workshop for local ranchers on Thursday, May 9, 2024, from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. The workshop is in collaboration with The California-Pacific Section of the Society for Range Management. The theme of the workshop is “Conservation Ranching: Practices, Benefits, and Challenges”.
The workshop will take place at the UCCE Merced office classroom on 2145 Wardrobe Avenue Merced, CA.
Topics include:
- grazing for species and habitat conservation
- payment for ecosystem services
- compost application
- grazing in orchard systems
- virtual fence applications
- conservation grazing to promote diversity
- the rangeland monitoring network.
There will be an afternoon field visit to UC Merced Vernal Pool and Grassland Reserve to discuss vernal pool ecology, RDM and conservation grazing practices, rangeland monitoring network, and using remote sensing to measure forage production and RDM.
