YOSEMITE–Yosemite Fire is assessing conditions to conduct prescribed burning operations in the Studhorse area (south of the Wawona Hotel) this week. If conditions allow, active burning may take place on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, and Thursday, April 20, 2023. Fire crews plan to target approximately 150 acres on the northeastern side of Wawona Road (Highway 41) and will have traffic control in place.
The Washburn Fire of 2022 impacted the eastern edge of the planned 150 acres, and a trail safety closure remains active in the area. Fire crews plan to begin ignitions on that eastern edge and then continue to the western portion of the Studhorse area. Please see the map below.
Burning under favorable conditions helps create a healthier forest, improves wildlife habitats, protects infrastructure and natural resources, and lowers the risk of more dangerous fires and smoke impacts. Impacts from smoke are always a consideration, and burning will only be conducted under favorable dispersal conditions. Smoke will be visible along the road and in the Wawona area during active burning operations and may still be present several days after active ignitions.
