COARSEGOLD — Yosemite Drug, a family-owned pharmacy in Coarsegold, has announced it will shut its doors for good. Thus, marking the end of its service to community since the opening in 2019. The pharmacy has been a crucial healthcare provider in the rural town, offering a wide range of services including vaccinations, COVID-19 testing, and medication compounding.
Financial Challenges Prompt Closure
In a message on social media, Yosemite Drug expressed gratitude toward the community, patients, and employees for their support over the years.
“This has been an extremely difficult decision for us, and we will truly miss being here,” the pharmacy stated.
Additionally, owner Kate Bass cited financial strains as the primary reason for the closure. Challenges with reimbursements from pharmacy benefit managers have made it unsustainable to continue operations.
Bass explains, “A drug might cost us $500 to purchase, and they’re paying us $450 or maybe even $480. It’s not just about the cost of the medication; it includes my time, my staff’s time, the lights, the building, everything.”
Community Impact
Unfortunately, the closure is a significant blow to residents who rely on the pharmacy for essential healthcare services. Connie Schock, a store clerk at Yosemite Drug, highlighted the impact on the community.
“It breaks my heart because I know how much these people need us,” she said.
During the pandemic, Yosemite Drug played a pivotal role by quickly organizing vaccine clinics and offering COVID-19 testing, demonstrating its commitment to the community’s health.
The last day for patients to pick up their prescriptions at Yosemite Drug will be February 26. Customers are encouraged to arrange their final pickups before the closing date.
Moreover, all patient prescriptions are being transferred to the Vons pharmacy in Oakhurst to ensure continuity of local care. Yosemite Drug is also facilitating potential transfers of their staff to Vons to maintain familiarity for their patients.
