Wakaalətti’: Our Creek – Restoring Land, Healing Community

MARIPOSA — A new documentary about restoring nature and strengthening the community is coming to Mariposa. This March, local organizations will premiere Wakaalətti’: Our Creek – Restoring Land, Healing Community. The film showcases the ongoing restoration of Mariposa Creek Parkway, a project that has helped revive the environment and local culture.

A Special Evening of Film & Discussion

To begin, the event will feature a special screening of the documentary. After the film, there will be a Q&A panel discussion featuring the documentary’s director, Amanda Law, along with leaders from:

These experts will share insights on the project and answer questions from the audience.

Additionally, guests will be able to explore informational booths, learn about future creek restoration efforts, and find ways to get involved. The event is free and open to all ages, making it a perfect opportunity for families, students, and community members to connect.

Capturing the Journey of Restoration

The film was directed by Amanda Law of Lovely Films. Amanda has spent the past two years documenting the creek’s transformation. Working alongside local videographer David Boomer, she filmed the project in eight different sessions from early 2022 to mid-2024, capturing the landscape in every season. Amanda carefully crafted the documentary to reflect the project’s growth.

Founder of Lovely Films, Amanda Law.

“As the Mariposa Creek restoration project changed, so did the scope of this video,” Amanda said. “We ebbed and flowed along with it, letting the video take shape in a way that honored the desires and needs of the project partners.”

She continues, “Sometimes the hardest thing to do with documentary filmmaking is to get out of your own way, and let the story take on a life of its own.”

Support Local Conservation

The event will celebrate the success of the Mariposa Creek restoration and give attendees a way to support future efforts. A special one-night-only membership package will be available, allowing guests to join and contribute to the work of the Mariposa Arts Council, Sierra Foothill Conservancy, and the Southern Sierra Miwuk Nation at a discounted rate.

This premiere offers participants a chance to learn, engage, and be part of something meaningful. Whether you’re passionate about conservation or local history or simply want to enjoy an inspiring story, this event is for you.
