ValleyPBS Scores Big at This Year’s Emmy Awards

SAN FRANCISCO — The 51st Annual Northern California Area EMMY® Awards were presented Saturday evening, June 11, at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square.

Image of the Emmy Award logo. The EMMY® Award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The Northern California Area EMMY Awards encompasses TV stations and production companies in the Fresno-Visalia, San Francisco-San Jose, Sacramento, Reno, Chico-Redding, and Hawaii television markets.

ValleyPBS, KVPT, Channel 18 in Fresno, the PBS station that covers Bakersfield to Merced and is based in Fresno, took home four Emmy Awards, the most in a single night in station history.

ValleyPBS CEO, Jeff Aiello, his wife Jill, and their production team regulars David Boomer, Zack Allen, and Matt Drake, along with their guests all attended the gala in San Francisco.

Aiello’s year-long work on the “Creek Fire film Afterburn: The Creek Fire Documentary” won the Emmy for outstanding achievement in a topical documentary as well as an Emmy for the spot/trailer that promoted it. David Boomer and Zack Allen also received Emmys for their work on the project.

The popular travel series “Outside Beyond The Lens,” which features Jeff, David, and Zack exploring the world and capturing stunning landscape photography won the Emmy for best Lifestyle Long Format show for the second year in a row. This series, produced by Jeff and Jill Aiello’s 18THIRTY Entertainment for ValleyPBS is nationally syndicated and airs in nearly 300 U.S. television markets.

The ValleyPBS original series “American Grown: My Job Depends On Ag” won its first Emmy Award for outstanding achievement in a public affairs television show. The gritty docu-series focuses on the triumphs and struggles of today’s agricultural industry.

“It was a great night for ValleyPBS, 18THIRTY Entertainment, and for the sponsors and viewers that support us and these shows,” Aiello said after the gala Saturday night. “I was really happy to see David Boomer, a childhood friend that grew up with me in the Oakhurst area, win his first Emmy after working so hard with me traveling all over the world since 2009.”

The line-up of Emmy Award-Winning programs can be seen on the ValleyPBS streaming app or at valleypbs.org.

The EMMY® Award is presented for outstanding achievement in television by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). San Francisco/ Northern California is one of the nineteen chapters awarding regional Emmy® statues.

Northern California is composed of media companies and individuals from Visalia to the Oregon border and includes Hawaii and Reno, Nevada. Entries aired during the 2021 calendar year.

A total of 905 entries were received, 772 English and 133 Spanish in 73 English Categories and 22 Spanish Categories.

Nominations were announced on May 11th with 225 English and 45 Spanish. Electronic ballots were submitted by a minimum of seven peer judges from other NATAS chapters and were sent directly to our accountant.

The Spanish and English awards are judged and scored separately and then presented at the ceremony.

345 Emmy® statues were handed out to 222 individuals. The top three recipients were all from the Golden State Warriors. Derek Parker, Media Manager, with seven. Kassidy Iwashita, Senior Producer, and Blake Wilderding, Director of Production, with six each.

Followed by four recipients from abc10 KXTV, Sacramento with five statues each: Reporters: Johnathon Bartell and Brandon Rittiman; Photographers: Tyler Horst and Rory Ward.

The Emmy® is awarded to individuals but there is a lot of interest in the station counts: abc10 KXTV with 14 followed by NBC Bay Area KNTV, ten, and abc7 KGO and KSTS Telemundo 48, both had nine.

The prestigious Governors’ Award, the highest honor a regional chapter can award was presented to Gary Gerould, Sportscaster for the Sacramento Kings. Three Governors’ Citations were presented to Alison Gibson, Media Cool, James Spalding, Spalding & Company, and Bob Rucker, retired San Jose State University. The Governors’ Service Medallion was awarded Larena Baldazo, Laney College and Brooks Jarosz, KTVU FOX 2.

The Gala was produced by Governor Julie Watts, CBS Sacramento, with music provided by Michael Hatfield and announcing by Len Ramirez, CBS Bay Area KPIX. Video production, San Francisco Media Group, with editing done by our Past President and Activities Program chair Steve Shlisky.

Chapter President Randy Forsman handled the directing duties.

You can view the entire webcast and red‐carpet interviews on the chapter’s website emmysf.tv as well as download the souvenir program and order photos of the event from our five photographers.
