BASS LAKE — A suspected drunk driver traveling north on Road 274 near Fog Point failed to negotiate a turn and flipped his pickup about 2 miles south of the Pines Resort turnoff. The accident happened about 4:45 pm on Monday, Aug 20, and closed the road in both directions.
Travis Coleman, 33, of Cascadel Drive in North Fork was arrested on the scene for driving under the influence.
“It was a single vehicle DUI,” said CHP Officer Dominici, who responded to the accident. “The driver was arrested and transported to the Madera County Jail.”
Coleman was not seriously injured, but had some bumps and bruises to his head. The 2006 Chevy Colorado he was driving was totaled.
A witness told Sierra News Online that he was driving on Road 274 toward Oakhurst, came around a corner and found a man wandering around in the road calling for his dog. After yelling for him to get out of the road, the witness proceeded to the next curve where he came upon the man’s overturned pickup in the middle of the road.
Several Forest Service employees who were headed in the same direction, called in the accident and began stopping traffic.
The dog who was in the truck at the time of the accident ran off into the woods, and has yet to be located.
Three CHP units, two Cal Fire Engines, two wreckers from Doc’s Towing and a Forest Service Law Enforcement Officer responded to the accident. Traffic was stopped in both directions for about an hour while the scene was cleared.
