Ungulate Destroys House

Not just a catchy subject line. This was our classy two story decorative birdhouse on our front porch as of yesterday afternoon, although the photo was taken last year and the bluebird did not end up nesting there.

Not just a catchy subject line. This was our classy two story decorative birdhouse on our front porch as of yesterday afternoon, although the photo was taken last year and the bluebird did not end up nesting there. During the night a loud crashing noise got our attention, but we saw nothing on the back deck. This morning we looked out on the front porch and surveyed the grisly scene.
Six feet away from its previous location:

We can only theorize that the perp was the guy resting yesterday around sunset less than twenty feet away. But if it was he, why would he create such destruction on our porch? We are speculating that some predator (mountain lion? Bear?) showed up, he spooked and ran in the opposite direction, which would be towards the porch—and the birdhouse. Deer, when spooked, find the flagstone very slippery because of their hooves, as we have witnessed before when coming around a corner of the house and surprising one.

Never a dull moment
