COARSEGOLD, CA — Spooky season is here, and nothing kicks off the fall festivities in Coarsegold quite like the much-anticipated, Tarantula Festival. Set to take place at the Coarsegold Historic Village, this event celebrates tarantula mating season with food, crafts, games and contests for all ages. Thus, making this a perfect fall event event for the families in the area.
Tarantulas on the Move: A Season Spectacle
To begin, as the weather cools down, tarantulas, particularly the California Ebony Tarantula, emerge from their burrows in search of mates. Despite their intimidating appearance, these “gentle giants” are harmless to humans and play a crucial role in controlling insect populations. Therefore, though some may find these creatures a bit eerie, they play a crucial role in our ecosystem. Keep an eye out for them as you drive through the area, as they tend to cross roads slowly. In turn, making them easy to spot.
For those unfamiliar with these creatures, it’s important to remember that tarantulas are not aggressive and rarely bite unless provoked. In addition, their slow, deliberate movements make them easy to avoid, so drivers and hikers should remain vigilant and allow them to pass safely. Keep in mind that their presence signifies the changing of the season and the health of the local environment.
