Ridin’, Rockin’ And Livestockin’ At The Mariposa County Fair

MARIPOSA — Labor Day weekend marks the return of one of the most anticipated events in Mariposa County — The Mariposa County Fair, running Friday through Monday, Aug. 31 through Sept. 3.

For nearly 80 years this has been the quintessential country fair, featuring agricultural events, displays, demonstrations, entertainment, a carnival, a midway and more, providing old-fashioned fun for the young and young-at-heart.

The theme of this year’s Mariposa County Fair is “Ridin’, Rockin’ and Livestockin’.”

Throughout all four days there are fun things to do. In additions to the thrills of the rides on the midway, folks can enjoy wandering entertainment, and live music at the Beer Garden and on the Amigo Stage.

A huge variety of entries, exhibits and displays include baked goods and confections, fruits/vegetables and nuts, jams and jellies, table settings, clothing and textiles, quilts, needlework, arts and crafts, paintings and drawings, photography, mechanical science, potted plants, cut flowers and floral arrangements.

The young people raising livestock as part of their 4-H and FFA activities will be showing off their hogs, lambs, goats, steers, poultry and rabbits. The Mariposa County Master Gardeners will be focusing on educational outreach activities. There will also be a wide variety of horse shows each day in the Gold Bowl Arena. Entrance is free with your paid admission to the Fair.

The Fair features a destruction derby on Saturday evening and a rodeo on Sunday, plus live music on both nights.

Take some time to explore the treasures inside the California State Mining and Mineral Museum at the fairgrounds. Discover California’s mineral wealth, colorful history and geologic diversity. The collection, which began in 1880, contains over 13,000 objects including mining artifacts, rare specimens of crystalline gold in its many forms, as well as beautiful gem and mineral specimens from California and around the world.
