Revival of "Mountain Belle" For Heritage Days

Oakhurst has been Oakhurst for 100 years in 2012, so the Fresno Flats folks want to make this September’s Heritage Days (Sept. 14 and 15) extra special.
How?

The “Mountain Belle” contest has been revived, but this being 2012, they’re looking for a “Mountain Beau” as well.

Clubs or individuals can sponsor candidates, who should be between 15 and 18 years of age. The deadline to enter is July 30th. Winners will be determined by the number of tickets sold. The tickets will cost $1 each or six for $5. Money must be turned in by Thursday, Sept. 13th.

Contestants will receive tips on manners, beauty, poise and how to interact with the public. Winners will be crowned at Heritage Days opening festivities on Friday, Sept. 14th, then ride on a float in the Heritage Days Parade on Saturday, Sept. 15th. The Belle and Beau will be expected to be celebrities at community functions throughout the coming year.

For more information, contact Mary Lou Finley at (559) 683-3789. Mary Lou also would like to hear from all former winners and contestants so give her a call.

The Fresno Flats organization is currently working on the schedule for the Heritage Days Festival. Here’s a preliminary rundown:

On the evening on Sept 14th, the Fresno Flats Historical Park will be alive with activities beginning at 4 p.m. There will be art activities for the kids, food, a beer booth, a silent auction plus crafts and vendor booths.

The Golden Chain Theatre mini-melodrama, “A Fastidious Finagling Fiasco Fixing Fresno Flats” will be performed, complete with cancan girls and singers from the Theatre. The play isn’t the true story of how the town got its name, but is full of puns, dastardly doings, mix ups and plots.

On Saturday, events will begin at 10 a.m. with the annual Heritage Days Parade. Then it’s back to Fresno Flats for tours of historic buildings, more food, shopping, demonstrations, the Sluice Box Derby and parade awards.

From 4:00 to 5:30 p.m., there will be a wine and cheese reception with the Chambermaid Singers, and the barbecue dinner will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
