MARIPOSA — In a major step forward for local healthcare philanthropy, the John C. Fremont Hospital Foundation has officially contracted with Miranda Wass to serve as its first-ever Executive Administrator. This new role marks a historic milestone for the all-volunteer Foundation, which has supported healthcare in the region for over 40 years.
Boosting Support & Strategy
Board President Heather Bernikoff emphasized the significance of this new chapter:
“We are overjoyed to have Miranda on our team. Her experience and expertise will help us advance our philanthropy in this next chapter of the Foundation’s work.”
Wass, a seasoned consultant with a strong background in nonprofit and administrative support, is already helping scale the Foundation’s efforts beyond what was previously possible for its volunteer board. She has successfully brought over $300,000 into Mariposa through complex government RFPs and was instrumental in launching the Mariposa Family Resource Center.
Additionally, Bernikoff noted the significance of the new role as the John C. Fremont Healthcare District continues efforts to build a new hospital.
“Having administrative support will greatly increase the Foundation’s capacity to fulfill our mission. In addition to the new building, we’ll need furniture, equipment, and other essentials that aren’t covered by the sales tax or other funding sources. Miranda will be instrumental in helping the board meet this challenge,” said Bernikoff.
Strengthening Regional Connections
Wass’s role will involve connecting the Foundation with Eastern Madera County residents, who make up over 13% of individual visits to the District’s Emergency Department.
“We also want to get to know our Madera County neighbors better,” added Bernikoff. “We welcome and invite them to partner with us in supporting the Healthcare District, a vital institution that we all have a stake in.”
Wass, who holds two associate degrees and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s in business administration at Cal State East Bay, expressed her excitement about the opportunity.
“I am thrilled to combine my passion for community and professional skills to support the JCF Hospital Foundation and the Healthcare District,” said Wass.
She continues, “I’m most excited to secure grant funding that supports education, the hospital, and the rural community.”
Supporting the Mission
Wass joins a dedicated board that includes Bernikoff, vice president Mike Wichmann, secretary Jill Harry, treasurer Saralynn Nusbaum, events co-chairs Anna Meijas and Megan Mickel, and fundraising chair Beth Tomsick. The Foundation operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and actively strengthens communities through its philanthropic partnerships with the John C. Fremont Healthcare District.
