MARIPOSA — The Mariposa Senior Center, in collaboration with the Mariposa Arts Council, is hosting two creative residencies this spring. From February 24th to March 31st, seniors will be able to engage in hands-on music and visual art experiences through two distinct six-week workshops.
Exploring Music Through Listening
To kick things off, the first residency is “Reflective Listening – The Songs that Defined the 20th Century.” This will take place on Mondays from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Music expert Ava Burns will lead this workshop series, diving into some of the most influential music recordings of the last century. Participants will listen closely to key songs, examining music patterns, lyrics, and performance styles. This will help guests better understand what made these pieces so powerful.
Creating Community Through Art
Additionally, for those looking to express their creativity visually, the second residency is “Legacies of Color.” This will take place on Thursdays from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. and be guided by artist Clay River. The residency will transform the Community Room at the Senior Center into a vibrant work of art. Participants will work together to paint a large-scale mural on panels. In turn, this collaborative artwork will celebrate teamwork, creativity, and community legacy. Whether experienced artists or beginners, all seniors are welcome to join in shaping this collaborative piece.
Importantly, both workshops are open to participants aged 55 and older, and space is limited. Those interested are encouraged to sign up at the Senior Center or by calling (209) 966-6632.
Enriching Senior Arts
Furthermore, the Mariposa Arts Council and the Senior Center are hosting these residencies as part of a larger six-artist residency series. These residencies aim to enrich the cultural and artistic opportunities available to local seniors. Moreover, the Mariposa Arts Council, a nonprofit organization, actively supports all forms of the arts throughout Mariposa County. This initiative exists thanks to the support from the County of Mariposa, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the California Arts Council.
