Madera County Moves Forward with CARE Act Implementation

MADERA – Madera County has the pleasure of announcing its participation in the second cohort of counties implementing the Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Act. The CARE Act, designed to enhance California’s mental health and homelessness services, aims to provide critical assistance for individuals with untreated mental health issues who struggle to access traditional services. The program officially launched on December 1st.

The program will serve adults aged 18 and older diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders who remain untreated. It allows for court petitions from various stakeholders with firsthand knowledge of the individual’s condition. This includes family members, the County, tribal jurisdictions, and community professionals

Poythress states, “Madera County is committed to enhancing our mental health resources and providing effective support for our most vulnerable residents. The CARE Act brings us a step closer to delivering on this commitment.”

Under the CARE Act, Madera County has established a comprehensive framework. This involves healthcare providers, social services, legal professionals, and local support organizations providing ongoing care and support to residents. This approach aims to coordinate to fill the gaps in the current mental health system, reduce the cycle of homelessness, and improve the overall quality of life for individuals with severe mental health conditions.
