Just as crews were finishing up with a fire at the intersection of Roads 415 & 416 southwest of Coarsegold, another fire broke out in the area, this one just off Highway 41 near Victoria Lane.
The call came in at 5:31 p.m. Tuesday Sept. 11, that a vegetation fire was burning just south of Oakhurst. Smoke from the fire could be seen from most anywhere in the Oakhurst area.
The fire was burning in dry grass next to the burnt-out foundation of a house that went up in flames several years ago, and the area was littered with trash.
One of the tall oak trees on the site continued to resist repeated efforts to douse it with the high-powered hose.
Cal Fire, Madera County and Forest Service crews got the flames knocked down, and the inmate crew from Mt. Bullion cut a line around the fire, containing the blaze by about 6:15 p.m.
5 Cal Fire engines and 2 crews, plus Madera County Engine 12 and water tender, U.S. Forest Service Engine 13 from Batterson and the Mt. Bullion crew all responded to the scene. Air attack was dispatched, but was called off.
Fire Prevention Specialist for Cal Fire Karen Guillemin was on the scene, and reports that less than one-quarter acre was burned and no one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
