History of Bass Lake

Other than Yosemite, Bass Lake is probably the biggest draw for visitors to the area, and a respite for locals to get out and enjoy this beautiful part of the world.

With a current population of about 2,200, Bass Lake was once a verdant meadow, surrounded by mountains and vast forests of pine and cedar.

But with the coming of the San Joaquin Electric company in 1901, and the building of the dam that captured the waters of Willow Creek, Bass Lake Village was born.

Now the area surrounding the lake is part of the US Forest Service Recreation Area, and is dotted with day use areas, camps and campgrounds, and a host of hotels and lodges, cabins and dining options. There are also several marinas where rentals are available for boats, barges, jet skis and a range of equipment for fun on the lake.

Bass Lake is also host to the region’s only Fourth of July fireworks display. The festivities can be enjoyed from the shores of the lake, a boat or party barge, or from one of the many businesses that line the water’s edge. The first weekend in May brings the annual fishing derby, and Friday evenings in the summer can be spent enjoying music under the stars.
