MARIPOSA — The last weekend of Music on the Green – the free summer concert series brought to you by The Mariposa County Arts Council and its many fine sponsors – wraps up the 2018 season featuring two of the best ever presented on the Art Park Stage in historic downtown Mariposa: Good Medicine & Friends on Friday, August 24, and The Roger Perry Group on Saturday, August 25.
Good Medicine was the favorite band for Cousin Jack (the late minstrel/impresario that Music on the Green is dedicated to) and have played 26 of the 27 seasons of Mariposa Evenings/Music on the Green — their appearances are a yearly tradition. Their music has been described as “folk-a-delic,”a distinct California-centric sound, mixing original songs with select, deep cut covers, entertaining audiences from the foothills to the coast for more than twenty-seven years now.
Frank and Deb Sipes (the core duo) each have an impressive musical pedigree (more on their web-site at goodmedicinemusicnorthfork.com, Facebook, and ReverbNation pages) as songwriters, performers and recording artists, and this Friday will be presenting in full band mode, with extra players adding more electrified dynamics and extended improvisation to the group’s eclectic repertoire. All this topped off with Deb’s famous rendition of “Amazing Grace” in the Cherokee language at the end of the show, proves why Good Medicine is a perennial favorite on the Art Park Stage.
Being influenced by disparent music styles such as rock, blues, real country, reggae, poly-rhythmic jazz and folk, and by various artists – from Leonard Cohen to John Coltrane, Miles Davis to Frank Zappa, and including Elvis, Johnny Cash and Mike Nesmith – make Fresno music icon Roger Perry difficult to easily categorize, but extremely entertaining nonetheless. With a moving singing voice that can be likened to Roy Orbison and the natural guitar playing skills of Glen Campbell, Perry is a formidable talent on his own, performing solo. Surrounded by the experienced professionals – known regionally, nationally, and internationally – that fill out his group, make for an even more powerhouse performance.
