OAKHURST—Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest has been a popular play for 135 years. When a work has remained so for that long, it must be something special.
Classic Comedy
The Golden Chain Theatre brings this classic comedy to the stage May 24 through June 16. During the production, audiences meet a parade of ridiculous characters whose views on life are hysterically nonsensical.
Sharp Wit, Clever Phrasing
A farce satirizing the upper classes of 19th Century British culture and manners, the play’s staying power comes from the sharp wit and clever turns of phrase that keep it connecting with the modern funny bone.
Director Michael Van Buren has loved this show for many years. He says,
“The story of this show is a lot of fun, with misrepresented identities, laughable love interests and improbable plot twists. It is the witty dialogue, however, that has always impressed me.”
Van Buren continues, “Almost everything that every character says is exactly the opposite of what any reasonable person would expect. The characters are so absurd and quick-witted, it keeps me in stitches no matter how many times I watch it.”
Stellar Cast
The cast consists of Brody Suderman as Lane, Alexander Reveé as Algernon, and Jackson Cosby as Jack. Jennifer Janine plays Lady Bracknell, Kaley Marsh as Gwendolyn, Ally Ferbrache as Cecily. Mary Helen Mierkey portrays Miss Prism, Leonard Brown is Rev. Chasuble, and Ruthann Van Buren is Matron Merriman. These actors have worked for months to bring these uniquely amusing characters to life.
The entire cast looks forward to bringing this charming and entertaining story to Golden Chain audiences.
