Focus On Vibrant Health – GLP-1 Drugs and The Hijacking of Your Body

NORTH FORK, CA – Medications known as GLP-1 drugs, such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and more have become increasingly popular for weight loss and blood sugar control. They are thought to mimic a naturally occurring hormone that has many functions in your body. Their use also comes with many potential side effects, some of which are very dangerous.
Today, approximately 70% of Americans are overweight or obese. This is a significant issue, for every aspect of health. It affects your ability to be active, often increases various types of pain, and can lead to chronic health problems. It also affects emotional health, which we have discussed truly cannot be separated from overall health.
What is natural GLP-1, or glucagon-like peptide-1? It is thought to be a hormone produced in the intestines in response to food intake, playing a role in stimulating insulin secretion, inhibiting glucagon release, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting a feeling of fullness. Glucagon is thought to be a hormone from the pancreas that increases blood sugar levels, preventing it from dropping too low.
With this many potential customers, you can imagine that obesity is something Big Pharma is very interested in. The GLP-1 drugs are designed to mimic the effects of natural GLP-1, and have been shown to cause appetite suppression, slow gastric emptying (making you feel full), and to decrease desire for energy-dense foods (high fat and high sugar). To make a drug, it had to be chemically different, and manipulated to break down more slowly.
What are the typical weight loss results from these drugs? Modest over 18 months, about 6 pounds in one study. Placebo-controlled trials demonstrate 1.6% to 5% weight loss, often over 12 months. Some studies show a 15% weight loss over time. The real clincher is that individuals are likely to regain the weight after discontinuing GLP-1 therapy. These drugs work best when combined with an individualized approach that includes nutrition changes, regular physical activity (including strength training), and behavioral support. It is essential to have knowledgeable ongoing medical monitoring.

Common side effects include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea or constipation, bloating and stomach discomfort, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, menstrual irregularities, flat mood, anxiety, depression, malnutrition, and loss of muscle and bone. The loss of muscle mass (over 30% of the weight loss) and bone density do not appear to recover when the drug is stopped, and are of serious concern. Rare but serious risks include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, acute kidney injury and thyroid tumors. Potential cognitive, eye, and other organ system impacts are likely to show up with widespread and prolonged use.
GLP-1 drugs are not recommended for cosmetic weight loss. They are approved for people with a BMI of 30 or higher, or a BMI of 27 or higher with type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and/or sleep apnea. Also, certain medical problems and drug interactions make these drugs dangerous. Just because they are “approved” does not mean they are the best solution for you if you have any of these medical problems.
What about non-FDA approved peptides? In reality we just don’t know much about them. There are no safety studies, no long-term data, and no regulation. It is difficult to know if the product is what is claimed. If you choose this path, it is your choice to experiment and take the risk of potential consequences…and benefits.
The body has many complex systems to properly manage your energy pathways and your entire physiology. Much of what we think we know is actually only theory. All drugs interfere with the normal functioning of your body in ways that are not fully understood. GLP-1 drugs are not risk-free and are not guaranteed to work well for everyone. Like any medical treatment, the right choice depends on your individual situation. They can be a powerful tool in some cases, and should always be combined with lifestyle support for there to be any long-term benefit.
Next week we will discuss how to increase GLP-1 naturally, and other hormones such as leptin and ghrelin that support healthy weight.
