NORTH FORK, CA – Social connections are essential to your physical, mental, and emotional health.  They might be with your partner, family, friends, and community.  The benefits of social connections come from your internal and subjective sense of connection, not from the actual number of friends you have.  You will do best if you have at least a few people that you know you can count on.

Both offering help and asking for it create a sense of belonging in this sometimes impersonal modern culture.  For many people, asking for help can be the biggest challenge.  This can be done through your family, your church, friends that you share something in common with, activities in your community, or any place you find meaning for yourself where you connect with other people.  We need each other.

Feelings of social isolation and loneliness have dramatically increased in the last 6 years, which should not be a surprise knowing what we all went through.  The rise in the use of digital technologies is also a contributing factor.  In this tech-heavy time, we cannot forget the value of in-person interactions.

In 2024 30% of adult Americans reported feeling lonely at least once a week, and 10% felt lonely every day.  This is concerning.  Feeling connected is associated with increased lifespan, better cognitive function, and better mental health.  Multiple studies show lower rates of chronic diseases such as stroke, heart diseases, and diabetes.

Social connection is a fundamental human need, and cannot be ignored.  Do not let divisiveness separate you from your fellow human beings.  You can find something in common with every single person.  Reach out, even across age differences, that person may need you even more than you need them.
