MADERA — In a historic moment for Madera County, the Board of Supervisors will represent its first-ever proclamation recognizing a K-9 Deputy for his extraordinary bravery in the line of duty. Canine Obie will be honored for his heroic actions during a dangerous pursuit in November of 2024. During this pursuit, he sustained gunshot wounds while protecting deputies from an armed felon.
Honoring Obie
For his courage and sacrifice, Obie was awarded the prestigious “Purple Heart“, a recognition rarely bestowed upon K-9 officers. Despite his injuries, Obie made a remarkable recovery. He has since returned to duty full-time, continuing to serve and protect the community.
Officials will present the proclamation on Tuesday, February 25, at 10:00 a.m. inside the Board of Supervisors Chambers at the Madera County Government Center. Although it is short notice, we encourage community members to attend. Their presence will show support for Obie and the vital role K-9 units play in law enforcement.
Moreover, this event marks a significant step in recognizing the bravery and dedication of law enforcement animals. It demonstrates Madera County’s commitment to honoring those who put their lives on the line–both human and canine alike.
Sheriff Praises Obie’s Heroism
Sheriff Tyson Pogue emphasized the significance of Obie’s actions.
“Obie’s actions may very well have saved a deputy’s life, and we are deeply thankful for his sacrifice,” Pogue said.
He continues, “This recognition underscores the critical role K-9 units play in ensuring public safety and highlights Madera County’s commitment to honoring their service.”
